Credible monetary policy with private government preferences

This paper provides recursive methods for analyzing the credible equilibria of an incomplete information monetary policy game. The policy game is one in which a discretionary government has a short run temptation to engage in a surprise monetary expansion. It also has the opportunity to mimic a government that is committed to the optimal ex ante monetary policy actions. We derive an algorithm f...

Expressive Voting and Government Redistribution*

Models of expressive voting postulate that voters will ‘consume’ ideological or moral stances on issues by voting for them, even when they are against the voter’s own narrow self interest, if the probability of being a decisive voter is low. When a voter is unlikely to sway the outcome of the vote, the odds that a voter will incur any real personal cost (a higher tax burden, for example) from h...

Partisan preferences and valence voting

This paper examines the nature of partisan preferences on a range of issue scales. It compares preferences in a period of strong ideological focus, in the late eighties and early nineties, with preferences in 2000 and 2001 – a period of weak ideological focus. Where partisan preferences were formerly polarised, they are now more consensual. I argue that once positional issues now resemble valen...

A distributed voting scheme to maximize preferences

We study the problem of designing a distributed voting scheme for electing a candidate that maximizes the preferences of a set of agents. We assume the preference of agent i for candidate j is a real number xi,j , and we do not make any assumptions on the mechanism generating these preferences. We show simple randomized voting schemes guaranteeing the election of a candidate whose expected tota...

Issue-by-issue voting: an experimental evaluation

Multiple referenda consists in making a common decision about each of a set of binary issues, given the preferences of a set of voters. Asking voters for their preferences on all combinations of values is not feasible in practice, because of the exponentially large number of such combinations; on the other hand, voting issue-byissue on each of the issues can lead to strongly paradoxical outcome...
